A Zimbabwean online news site reported that sounds like 'gun shots' were heard being fired from around President Robert Mugabe's State residency, the State House on Thursday night.
Zimeye reports that the 'bangs' coming from the chancellor avenue area, began around 1900hrs with witnesses saying the 'shots' they were coming from within the State House.
The first 'bang' sound was followed by an estimated thirty others afterwards.
More than 30 minutes later sporadic bang sounds were still being heard. It was believed there could be be something wrong within the premises causing the exchange of fire.
Some people however speculated the sounds were mere fire-crakers celebrating the Chinese new year, but the Chinese event fell on the 31st January a day later.
Commenting on the story, a Cde Mzvinavhu (Prof) said: "Ndakazvihwa zvinenge pfuti asi hapana chandakafungira ( I heard the bang sounds but I did not speculate) becoz I am not given to satanic speculation and unfounded gossip! Kwandinogara pedo ne Chikuruvi ne Support Unit, uyezve ne Cleveland shooting Range! Pfuti music kwatiri isu most of the time! Ah kana hondo hatitye, even yemumwe uye okumboti anoda kubvisa our leader violently apo ayitaura kuRUFARO STADIUM, iye Chematama!" (I stay next to Chikurubi and Support Unit and Cleveland shooting range, gun shots is music to us most of the time! Even war we don't mind, even the one from that other gentleman who said he will remove our leader violently when he was addressing his followers at RUFARO STADIUM, that one with big cheeks!)
Dokta also commented saying: "The guys who wish the president dead are the people who are giving us these false stories. The people wish to hear that a coupe has occurred and the president was killed but I would advise them to wish for something else. You will never hear gunshots @ statehouse, neither will there be a coupe, at least not in a million years."
