The Roman Catholic nun, Sister Gertrude Sunduza based at Don Bosco in Masvingo who was found dead in her room two weeks; killed herself by drinking large quantities of rat poison and then piercing a sharp object through her heart, the postmortem carried out in Bulawayo is said to have established.
Police spokesperson for Masvingo, Charity Mazula confirmed the postmortem results to The Mirror this week.
The postmortem established that Sister Sunduza who was head of the Church's Shingirirai College in Mucheke, was found to have taken large quantities of pesticide used for killing rats and then used a sharp object to pierce her heart.
She was buried at Driefontein Mission last week.
Her suicidal tendencies were noticed in the period just prior to her death and her brother is said to have taken her away to Bulawayo to try and get her out of the depression. However, she then committed suicide barely a week after her return from Bulawayo when she was found lying on the floor of her room with part of her bed gutted by fire.
Catholics who spoke in interviews with The Mirror expressed concern at the sometimes sour relationship in the church that lead into priests and nuns sometimes abandoning their vows in desperation or committing suicide.
This is the second time in as many years that there has been a suicide in the Masvingo Diocese.
One parishioner said April now seems to be a black month for the Catholics after Fr Agrippa Semende threw himself under a heavy truck near Gokomere Mission on April 21 2013 while Sr Sunduza decided to take her life in a most bizarre way on April 26 2014.
The spokesperson for Masvingo Diocese Vicar General Walter Nyatsanza had promised to come back with a comment but had not done so up to the time of going to Press.
"I cannot give you a comment right now, I will come back to you later," said Vicar General Nyatsanza before cutting off.
