Daniel Shumba causing problems for Zanu-PF in Masvingo

THE gloves are off between Member of Parliament for Masvingo Urban Daniel Shumba and the Masvingo provincial leadership with the latter baying for the legislator's blood for not subordinating himself to party discipline. Shumba has reportedly been boycotting party events of selected party leaders, as factionalism gets uglier in Zanu-PF.
Shumba, who is linked to Psychomotor Minister Josiah Hungwe's camp which is said to be aligned to Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, had also previously attacked Masvingo Senator and Energy Minister, Dzikamai Mavhaire, believed to be the provincial godfather of a faction linked to Vice President Joice Mujuru.
Shumba told the media some days before the victory celebrations held over the weekend at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo that he was going to boycott the event, calling Mavhaire a divisive figure. "Let all progressive Zanu-PF members know that their venerated MP Daniel Shumba will not attend that fake victory celebration to be held in Mucheke Stadium on Sunday. The event was arranged clandestinely by people who continuously want to divide the party.
"I know that Mavhaire who is not an MP is mobilising councillors to bring people to the stadium but I urge those who want the development of their constituency to resist the move," Shumba said.
But Killian Gwanetsa, the provincial chairman, said the party would not hesitate to recall MPs who are going against the grain. "We have our MPs that are not maintaining discipline and failing to observe the party ideals as well as hierarchy and leadership structures. Let me make it very clear that we will not hesitate to recall you from Parliament. We will call you back to the cell level where you came from. We will not tolerate indiscipline," Gwanetsa said, while addressing a poorly attended victory celebrations rally at Mucheke Stadium.
His remarks were in apparent reference to Shumba, who snubbed the event despite it having been held in his constituency. While Mavhaire chose not to respond to the allegations, Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti attacked Shumba, saying he is still entrenched in his former party, the United People's Party (UPP). "Some people went to UPP and failed to get into power. After realizing that they had failed, they came back to Zanu-PF and won, but they should be reminded that they won because they were riding on the name of the party, they did not win as individuals," said Bhasikiti, in direct reference to Shumba.
Shumba formed UPP after he was suspended from Zanu-PF in 2004 being re-admitted. He did not pick up his phone when called for a comment. Former Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial chairman, Shumba was suspended from the party after participating in the infamous Tsholotsho meeting at Dingane in 2004, involving leading Zanu-PF members and current Information Minister Jonathan Moyo in which they were accused of mooting a boardroom removal of certain members of the Presidium.
Frustrated, Shumba went on to form his party, UPP, but failed to file his nomination papers to contest for the presidency in 2008. He was latter re-admitted into the party and contested the Masvingo Urban seat which he won in the 2013 elections.
