A 24-year-old Harare woman, who pretended to be a Good Samaritan to an expectant mother admitted at a city hospital, before 'stealing' her newly born baby, has been arrested.

Sandra Matunga of number 12, 4th Floor Sasdale flat in Harare, yesterday appeared before magistrate Nomsa Sabarauta charged with kidnapping. The magistrate remanded her in custody to November 21, pending trial commencement.

It is the state case that on October 26, the complainant, who was pregnant at the time, was transferred from Banket Hospital to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals due to some complications.

While at the referral facility, the complainant gave birth to a baby boy through a caesarian operation.  She was subsequently transferred to Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital as doctors were monitoring her condition.

The court heard that during the complainant's stay at the hospital, Matunga established good relations with her after misleading her that she was her distant sister.

Matunga allegedly supplied the complainant with food and the pair immediately developed strong ties.

Upon the complainant discharge from the hospital on November 5, Matunga then paid bills accumulated by the complainant and took the unsuspecting new mother to her flat in the capital.

The court further heard that due to her ill-health, the complainant would spend most of the time sleeping at the accused place of residence.

On the fateful day, she woke up and was surprised to see that her baby had disappeared. She inquired from Matunga who then informed her that the infant had been taken to a children's home in Waterfalls.

However, the complainant later learnt that her baby had been taken to Matunga's mother in Waterfalls after she had deceived her mother that she had given birth to a set of triplets.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Matunga's arrest. Kudzai Chigwedere appeared for the state.
