POLICE have so far arrested 144 traffic offenders of the more than 5 000 motorists on their wanted list. They are battling to account for the other suspects.
According to police the motorists are paying their fines to clear their cases but could not reveal the number of those who had paid so far.
Police recently launched an operation code named-Mhosva Hairovi, targeting traffic offenders.
National traffic police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome yesterday said the arrested motorists are appearing before the courts, where their cases are still pending.
"Some people are paying their fines.
"We are facing some problems to track down some of the motorists since they could have supplied us with false addresses while others could have moved from the addresses," he said.
Insp Chigome said they would continue with their blitz and urged those who had not paid their fines to visit any of their National Traffic Police Stations.
Insp Chigome reiterated that those who had paid their fines at such police stations, should notify the original stations which issued them with tickets.
Insp Chigome said the operation was continuing until all those on the wanted list had paid their fines.
Last month some of the motorists were phoning police officers to inquire where they should pay their fines but none of them visited any police station to clear their cases.
According to police statistics the motorists were issued with tickets, between 2009 and last year.
They have since been issued with warrants of arrests for failing to pay fines and appearing in court.
Police said they were still in possession of all the names of these motorists and the offences they committed.
"For all those who say they lost their tickets, we are in possession of a list with names, national registration number and the offences committed," Insp Chigome said.
They face charges ranging from driving without due care, failure to report an accident, failure to stop after an accident, no current valid licence disk, fake licences, dangerous driving, shattered windscreen, negligent driving and culpable homicide.
Also on the list are kombi drivers who were found without route authority, insecure load, no road service permit, no certificate of fitness, operating against timetable, over loading, no medical endorsement, failing to issue tickets, without certificate of fitness and using a car without the consent of the owner.
