A two bus crash along the Harare -Nyamapanda highway has claimed at least 23 lives.
21 people died on the spot while several others were injured in an accident, involving two buses, near the Harare-Mutoko tollgate.
The buses sideswiped each other in opposite directions leading to gross damage.
It is believed that the accident involved Unifreight and ZUPCO buses, with one going to Mutoko while the other was headed for Harare.
As yet unconfirmed reports say that two more people died on the way to hospital. One of them is believed to be one of the bus drivers.
Traffic accidents have increased on Zimbabwe's roads, many of which have deteriorated due to lack of maintenance as the southern African state grapples with more than a decade of economic turmoil.
Eye-witnesses attributed the accident to speeding by both drivers.
They called on relevant authorities to put signs for motorists to reduce speed at the place which they say is a blind spot.
Police are yet to confirm the number of casualties and they have indicated that they will issue a statement shortly.
In 2014 another Zupco bus was involved in a fatal accident some 4km away.
