President Mugabe has lost property and farm produce worth thousands of dollars to daring thieves, some of them working in cahoots with his relatives.

In one incident at his Kutama home, the President said he lost property to a relative working in connivance with a ZRP officer guarding the premises.

President Mugabe said this on Friday, while addressing hundreds of people at African Chrome Fields at Chinyika Ranch in Ward 2, Chirumanzu-Zibagwe constituency, who had gathered to witness the ground-breaking technology, the Exothermic (Alluminathemic) demonstration by African Chrome Fields (ACF) meant to beneficiate chrome ore to ferro-chrome.

The President bemoaned the prevalence of crime in the country, saying he had also not been spared by thieves in spite of him being President.

He said some of the thieving workers and relatives would sell potatoes worth over $5 000 per day, but indicated that they sold only $20 worth of produce in the receipt books.

President Mugabe said some of the workers bought cars and expensive furniture using such proceeds before they were arrested.

The President had the crowd in stitches when he said the thieves were brave enough to steal from a President.

"They even steal the milk, I do not know what kind of people they are. Kuti vanozeza here? Vakasungwa vave nechitsama tsama chevanhu zvinotonyadzisa kana kumbozeza kuti apa ndepa President. Kana mbatya ndinowana dzatorwa nyore nyore kwazvo kwazvo kana masocks, aah. Zvinonzi ipapo patinofamba todzoka mbatya dzinobatwa tingati neava kana neava zvinongonzi aah hameno patakafamba paya ndopadzakarasika," he said.

President Mugabe said his aunt who was assigned to look after his home in Kutama, also connived with a police officer guarding the premises to steal from him.

"Nekumba kwese kumusha kwaKutama zvimwe chetezvo. Tine mupurisa anogara paye zvino taive natete vanogara panext door vataiti ndivo vanochengeta zvomumba.

"Zvino vanyengwa semumvana anga asina murume zvikanzi 'aah ini ndichauya nekugedhe rakati wofanoisa briefcase kana aripo unoisa nepasi pehwindo apa ndotora, mupurisa iyeye. Zvino apa vakomana vakaona ndobva asungwa arikujeri izvozvi," he said.

President Mugabe said it was important that people be trustworthy and not abuse positions at their workplaces to enrich themselves.

He also said it was disturbing that some officials in the ruling party and Government were stealing agricultural inputs meant for farmers in the rural areas.

Every year there are reports of senior party officials who steal farming inputs donated by President Mugabe meant for the poor.
