Government Civil service audit hypocritical

Government must expend its energies on cutting down the President Robert Mugabe's foreign travels expenses as a matter of urgency before they put focus on civil servants, MDC has said.
The opposition MDC said it was criminal for government to shift attention to civil servants bloated wage bill and paying no attention to Mugabe's trips as it smacks of insincerity and hypocrisy of the highest order.
Below is a statement released by MDC today on ongoing civil servants audit:
While the move by government to do an audit of the civil service is commendable as it will address the issue of ghost workers and numerous other anomalies in the civil service and help to cut the salary bill, the MDC feels that if the need to cut down government expenditure is a genuine one, then government should start right at the top by cutting down on top brass spending, including President Robert Mugabe's foreign travels expenditure.
While it is indisputable that the 80 per cent being gobbled by civil service salaries from the national budget is a cause for serious concern, it remains even more of a concern that government is doing nothing about President Robert Mugabe's foreign travels which have since January this year gobbled up a staggering $10 million.
The MDC is deeply concerned that government is just watching and doing nothing about the irregular, wasteful and fruitless expenditure by President Mugabe and his top brass at the expense of millions of people who are suffering. It is unacceptable that ordinary Zimbabweans have to foot the bill for the President to go on merry go round trips all over the world which have not benefitted the country in any way.
Government must expend its energies on cutting down the President's foreign travels expenses as a matter of urgency before they put focus on civil servants. Shifting the attention to civil servants smacks of insincerity and hypocrisy of the highest order.
It is criminal that in a country that is virtually on its knees, so much money can be spent on the travels of one person and his bloated entourage.
