A GANG of three assailants who callously killed a Chipinge-based police constable who had tried to stop a scuffle between them and an unknown motorist was arrested last week.
The trio, Admire Zingori (25), Abel Masvinhu (34) and Trymore Bambamira (28) appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr James Gapara on Tuesday facing murder charges and were not asked to plead.
They were remanded in custody to June 9 and were also asked to apply for bail at the High Court since they were facing a serious offence.
The State led by Mr Witness Nyamundaya stated that on May 9 at around 11pm, Constable Dumisani Tuhwe was drinking beer at Dzonzai Special Bar in the company of Munyaradzi Sithole (21) of Samite Investment when he was attacked and murdered by the trio.
"When the bar was closed around 1am, Cst Tuhwe and other revellers went outside looking for taxis to go home.
"While outside, the first accused person, Admire Zingori picked a quarrel with a taxi driver, Tapiwa Ngadziore (31) who was driving one of the two remaining vehicles, a Honda Civic, Registration Number AAV 4534.
"During the quarrel, the two other suspects, Abel Masvinhu and Trymore Bambamira intervened and blocked Ngadziore's vehicle.
"The misunderstanding lasted for about 20 minutes.
"The late Cst Tuhwe together with Sithole who were occupants in another vehicle saw what was happening and Cst Tuhwe disembarked from the vehicle and proceeded to the car.
"He tried to resolve the dispute between Ngadziore and the three suspects. Ngadziore sped off from the scene leaving Cst Tuhwe and the three suspects arguing," he said.
Mr Nyamundaya said during the argument, Zingori assaulted Cst Tuhwe once on the face with an unknown object resulting in him falling down.
At that time, the yet to be identified vehicle in which Cst Tuhwe and his friend were in drove off leaving him (Cst Tuhwe) at the mercy of the three.
It is alleged that while Cst Tuhwe was trying to get up from the ground where he had fallen down, the second accused person, Masvinhu approached him from behind and assaulted him twice with fists on the ribs. He allegedly fell into a drainage canal.
The court heard that the third suspect, Bambamira kicked him once in the stomach.
"Bambamira proceeded to search his pockets and stole his Vodafone cellphone and the gang disappeared.
"A report was made to the police by Sithole who had witnessed the assault," he said.
Cst Tuhwe later died and a post-mortem performed by Dr Brian Makumbe indicated that the cause of death was intra cerebral bleeding head injury.
On May 22, suspects helped the investigating officers to recover Cst Tuhwe's Vodafone cellphone with a two-gig memory card containing his pictures.
