Mbanje paddler caught with 62kgs at around 3 am

A 32-YEAR-OLD Chipinge mbanje paddler was nabbed with 62kgs of the illegal stuff at around 3am.
Solomon Nkomo Gezi of Kushinga Village, Chief Musikavanhu in Chipinge appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mrs Sharon Chipanga was accused of unlawful possession of mbanje as defined in Section 157 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act) Chapter 9:23.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to Manica Post, the court heard through public prosecutor, Brian Madzura, that on April 22, at around 3am at Zamchiya Township in Chipinge, Constables Ndarega, Padiwa and Manyiwo were on border patrol duties when they spotted Gezi carrying a large baggage.
"They realised that Gezi had three bags which he took turns to carry to one storage point. When the police officers realised that Gezi had finished carrying the three bags to the storage point, they pounced on him.
"They discovered that Gezi's baggage was mbanje stashed in three mosquito nets. Gezi was subsequently arrested and the mbanje was confiscated. Mr Madzura said when the accused person had gathered his three baggages together they approached him and discovered that the baggage was in fact dagga stashed in three mosquito nets. The police officers subsequently arrested the accused person and recovered the dagga.
"On the same date at around 2pm, the mbanje was weighed at Checheche Zimpost in the presence of Gezi and it weighed 62kgs," he said.
In his defence, Gezi told the court that he only possessed one baggage of mbanje and the other two belonged to his two partners who managed to flee after seeing the police officers.
Mrs Chipanga remanded Gezi in custody to June 5 to allow the other two police officers who were not in court to testify.
