Manica Post reported that Banda was nabbed by Mutare Spar's security personnel after he had tried to leave the shop with unpaid for toiletries which included Intessa Perfume, Adidas Perfume, Adidas Roll-on and a 20s Dunhill cigarettes packet.
Said Mr Chavarika: "All the stolen items were recovered by the security personnel from his bag before he left the shop. He admitted to having had stolen the items which led to his arrest."
Asked if he was a smoker since he had stolen a packet of cigarettes, Banda said he wanted to sell the cigarettes.
"I wanted to sell the cigarettes and use the money for food at college since campus life is hard these days Your Worship."
However, he said the perfume was for personal use.
"I wanted to use the Adidas collection myself and give the Intessa perfume to my girlfriend," he said.
Banda begged for leniency from the court by stating that he was only a college student who had made a great mistake by shoplifting.
