A Zvishavane man who skipped the border to South Africa after being slapped with a maintenance bill was arrested and jailed after he returned home.
Takawira Makokisi (32) of Village 5, Chief Mazvihwa in Zvishavane who was arrested for failing to pay maintenance got the shock of his life when he was sent behind bars as a measure to force him to pay his $150 monthly maintenance.
According to Masvingo Mirror, Madiba said men were different from animals because they have a responsibility to look after their children.
He said if a man does not or cannot look after his children, he then must use protective methods including condoms.
"I will send you to prison because l want you to take care of your own child. You cannot behave like animals or birds, you cannot just make children and not take care of them. You must use protective methods if you cannot look after your own. You will therefore go to prison until you pay at least half your arrears," said Madiba.
Makokisi who had skipped to South Africa after a maintenance order was won against him was arrested immediately after he came back into Zimbabwe.
Prosecutor Audi Saidi told the court that on November 2014 Makokisi was ordered at Zvishavane Magistrate court to pay $150 monthly maintenance for the up keep of his child.
The accused failed or neglected to pay as ordered resulting in arrears accumulating to US$1 050 by May and he will be in prison till June 18 2015 if he does not pay $525 before that date.
