The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has expressed great concerns over the firing of 11 journalists at Daily News, a daily paper owned by Associated Newspaper recently.

The journalists were fired following the recent Supreme Court judgement that allows employers to terminate contracts of workers on notice of 3 months.

According to The Herald, the journalists namely Lloyd Mbiba, Thelma Chikwana, Margret Chinowaita, Wendy Muperi, Ray Matikinye, Kudzai Chawafambira, Godfrey Mutimba, Nyasha Chingono, Sandra Mtetwa, Lizzy Miller and Albert Masaka were presented with a letter signed by general manager of human resources Vongai Makombe.

The letter required the journalists to be given 3 months notice to terminate their contracts as provided by the Labour Act Section 12 (4) which allows employers to terminate contracts of workers on notice.

The Supreme Court's judgement is harsh and exposes workers to oppression.
It's so sad that the journalists are fired from work; one wonders what it is, that these journalists are taking with them in terms of benefits for working for that organisation, and how they will manage their families without a job in this economy of Zimbabwe.
