'No economic turnaround with Mugabe in power'

Zimbabwe is on the road to nowhere under the tired, clueless and out of depth leadership of Robert Mugabe, MDC leader Welshman Ncube has said.

Ncube, addressing the Matabeleland South MDC Provincial Council in Gwanda on Sunday, said Zimbabweans should not expect any economic turnaround as long as Mugabe and his "gang" were still in power.

"It is clear that the Zanu-PF regime is clueless on how to get the Zimbabwe economy back on track. Right now over 6 000 people just lost their jobs en mass within a week following the Supreme Court judgement on termination of employment without notice and the government has no clue on what to do and how to fix the problem," he said.

"You can bet your last rand that once they get round to acting they will, as usual, get it horribly wrong. When they meet instead of discussing ways of fixing the country's problems, all they ever do is fire each other. They seem permanently caught up in a time warp of factional and succession bloodletting. Zimbabwe has been on autopilot to nowhere for a long time now. Let us not fool ourselves into thinking that there will be any economic turnaround when Zanu-PF is still in power."

Ncube said the tragedy of Zimbabwe's current politics is that it lacks ideology, principle and vision.

"That is why we are now being told daily by all and sundry that our one and only purpose is to remove Mugabe from power and in this regard we must unite even with those who still profess loyalty to Zanu-PF even after being jettisoned from it. Very few are interested in discussing or engaging on issues of ideology or policy or values and principles or the plans which must guide us in the post Mugabe Zimbabwe.

"Right now all serious minded democrats should be focused on what it is we will do to rebuild Zimbabwe after Mugabe is gone."

The MDC leadership is conducting consultative meetings in all 12 party provinces. To date it has dealt with Harare, Bulawayo, Chitungwiza and Matabeleland South. The leadership assigned to Matabeleland North, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Masvingo, Mashonaland Central and the Midlands provinces are scheduled to meet these provinces in the next few weeks.
