The axe is hovering over 624 Chitungwiza Town Council workers.
The council is said to have spent the day in meetings discussing terminating of employees' contracts on three months' notice.
In a telephone interview with ZBC News, Chitungwiza Mayor Phillip Mutoti first denied that the council is laying off 624 workers, but later said they were in meetings discussing the dismissal issue.
Mutoti said one of the meetings had been inconclusive as the officials failed to agree on the dismissal issue.
Last week, the Harare City Council made headlines after its plan to lay off 3000 workers was blocked by the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere.
