Confusion over import ban

The importation ban on several items has turned into a circus as government departments are issuing conflicting reports.
On Monday evening there where media reports indicating that protesting travellers at Beitbridge border post had forced Zimbabwe Revenue Authority to suspended the implementation of the controversial ban on importing certain items.
The ban was gazetted only last week under statutory instrument number 64 of 2016 which sought to tighten screws on imports of basic commodities.
At the weekend, fed up travellers at Beitbridge Border post staged protests after Zimra officials had randomly confiscating items.
But in a twist, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mike Bimha told the ZBC News that the ban would be enforced in July.
"The regulation comes into effect next month, when the importation of some commodities in the statutory instrument will now require the granting of permits" he said.
The goods that have been literally banned include coffee creamers (Cremora), Camphor creams, white petroleum jellies and body creams.
The long list also includes furniture, baked beans and potato crisps, cereals, bottled water, mayonnaise, salad cream, peanut butter, jams, maheu, canned fruits and vegetables, pizza base, yoghurts, flavoured milks, dairy juice blends, ice-creams, cultured milk and cheese.
