Date for Mbuya Makamure memorial set

The date for the
memorial service of the late Ambuya Vaida Vongai Makamura (nee Nyemba)
who was declared a liberation war heroine has been set.
The memorial will take place in Rhodhene in Masvingo on July 9, 2016. This was confirmed by Wellington Makamure, one of the late Mbuya Makamure's sons.
"We will hold the memorial service for Ambuya Makamure in Rhodene in July where family members, relatives and friends will gather to celebrate the life an iconic community leader, mother and grandmother," said Makamure.
Ambuya Makamure died on May 22, this year at the age of 81 in Johannesburg at her daughter Vongai Nduna's place after she had gone to South Africa for medical review. This was after doctors had diagnosed her of cancer which she battled with for three years.
Mbuya Makamure was declared a heroine because of her illustrious contribution to war of independence for this country.
Thousands of people gathered at her burial on May 28, 2016 at Farm 19, Masemera in Gutu. Also present at the funeral to pay their last respects were Provincial Administrator Felix Chikovo, director in the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Kudakwashe Machako, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service Commissioner General Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi, Retired Brigadier General Charles Hwekwete, Army Chaplain General Nyakudya and business executives from across the country.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Joram Gumbo who gave testimony in Harare before Mbuya Makamure's body was taken to Masvingo for burial described the late as a principled party cadre and an upright woman who always wanted the best from everyone.
"We should not mourn the death of this iconic woman instead we should celebrate her achievements as exhibited by her works and the way she brought up her children, participated in the war of liberation and her contribution to Government as a civil servant," said Gumbo.
The same service was also attended by Munesu Munodawafa the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Mary Chiwenga, the wife of Commander of the Defence Forces, ZRP Deputy Commissioner General Josephine Shambare and several business executives among others.
Ambuya Makamure was married to the late veteran educationist, Danidzirai Humanikwa Makamure popularly known as DH in the education circles. DH was one of the first black headmasters in the country when he was appointed to head Makumbe High School in Buhera and at the time of his death in 2001 he was the deputy provincial education director for Masvingo.
Ambuya Makamure worked in the Ministry of Women's Affairs at various levels after independence. She was also a member of the Zanu PF provincial executive.
She ensured that all her children went to school and enjoyed high standards of life, one of them is Winston Makamure former manager to the former iconic national team captain, Peter 'Nsukuzonke' Ndlovu. Ambuya Makamure is survived by five children and 19 grandchildren.
