Dube beats MDC-T preferred candidate to land Bulawayo Town Clerk job

THE Local Government Board has approved the appointment of Mr Christopher Dube (55) as the new Town Clerk of Bulawayo.
Mr Dube, who was Victoria Falls Town Clerk, replaces Mr Middleton Nyoni who died in September last year. The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere, yesterday confirmed the appointment.
Mr Dube beat the city's Chamber Secretary, Mrs Sikhangele Zhou, former Tsholotsho Rural District Council chief executive officer Mr Ronnie Dube and Hwange Colliery Company finance manager Mr Gift Sibanda to the post.
"I was briefed about the appointment of Christopher Dube as the Bulawayo City Council Town Clerk this afternoon. We would like to commend the Bulawayo City council for following procedures. We however don't know when he shall start working, that's something that'll be determined by the Bulawayo City Council," said Minister Kasukuwere.
Council sources on Friday revealed that the local authority had received the letter of appointment and would soon move to engage Mr Dube. The Mayor, Councillor Martin Moyo, however said he was not aware of the development and could not comment.
"The Local Government Board (LGB) which has the final say on the appointment hasn't notified me on that development and so I cannot comment on it," said Clr Moyo. Mr Dube told The Chronicle that he had not yet been informed about his appointment.
A keen tennis player, Mr Dube was born in Nkayi and is married, with four children. He worked in the finance department of the Zimbabwe National Army between 1980 and 1997. He left the army as major and joined the Bulawayo City Council administration department.
Between 2003 and 2008, Mr Dube was a director of finance in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing. In 2009, Mr Dube became Victoria Falls Town Treasurer and in May 2014, became Town Clerk in the resort town.
The new Bulawayo Town Clerk holds a law degree from the University of South Africa, has a masters degree in Business Administration obtained from the Zimbabwe Open University (Zou) and a Diploma in Business Leadership from the Zimbabwe Institute of Management.
He also holds a Chartered Institute of Secretaries (CIS) Diploma, a Higher National Diploma in business studies from the Bulawayo Polytechnic and a London Chamber of Commerce (LCC) certificate in public relations.
