After delivering what was a grand speech at an event dubbed "The State of the Profession-Looking Forward" on the 21st of April 2017 in South Africa, President Biti has once again been invited to grace a gathering of South African lawyers.
Mr Biti will tomorrow the 16th of September 2017 deliver a key note address at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the North West Attorneys' Council. The meeting will take place at an International Convention facility in South Africa.
The North West Attorneys' Council represents 824 attorneys practicing in the North West Province and reports directly to the Law Society of the Northern Provinces (LSNP), which statutory body governs the attorneys' profession in the 4 provinces comprising of Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Province.
Mr Biti will speak to the challenges lawyers face practicing in a developing constitutional democracy against the background that South Africa celebrated the 20th anniversary of the post-apartheid Constitution.
He will draw parallels of the environment in South Africa with that in Zimbabwe where political interference is high even in the Judiciary. The PDP will release a detailed statement in this regard.
Mr Biti has been recognised for his efforts in using constitutional law as a tool for social change and his consistent human rights work which involves high impact litigation in public interest cases.
After the adoption of the new constitution, he committed to creative litigation in a hostile environment winning landmark constitutional cases which changed the face of jurisprudence in Zimbabwe including the famous case Obadiah Makoni.
In this case the court declared unconstitutional the idea of life imprisonment without parole and confirming the idea that state penitentiaries must take a correctional and rehabilitative approach as opposed to creating hell for inmates.
This case earned him a slot at an international conference on the rights of prisoners held in South Africa early this year. His presentation on this occasion earned him great respect from South African practitioners who invited him to be the guest of honour at the Law Society of South Africa's general meeting which was held in Port Elizabeth in April.
Recognising all the hard work and commitment to human rights and constitutional law, the Chairperson of the North West Attorneys Council Anneke van Eck also granted him the honour to address the august event of Legal Practitioners in the North West.
The People's Democratic Party is proud to have a leader of Mr Biti's ilk, his work is recognised the world over. He is currently involved in a legal battle against the first amendment of the constitution which was passed without the requisite two thirds majority in parliament.
On the 13th of September, President Biti addressed the Royal United Services Institute for Defence& Security Studies at the launch of a book titled "Making Africa Work" which was written by President Obasanjo and others. In his presentation he also spoke about the economic effect of ZANUPF failure.
"I lived in a country where the consequences of economic mismanagement are real and stark, I would not wish it on anybody, "he said.
Our party is therefore committed to providing thought leadership and top drawer solutions not only in Zimbabwe but the region and the continent at large.
