The MDC has received with shock and sadness the passing on of Vice President John Landa Nkomo after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 79.
The MDC values the contribution he made towards the creation of a stable and peaceful political environment in the country as co-Chairman of the National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration organ.
We painfully note that he departed from this world at a time when his appeal for peace and unity was about to go for litmus test in this year's watershed elections.
He will be fondly remembered for his role in Zimbabwe's struggle for independence. The sacrifice he made in pursuit of the freedom of all Zimbabweans will without a doubt make him impossible to forget.
We shall also remember him as a dedicated cadre who selflessly served his country in various government ministries, in the promotion of workers' rights and parliament after independence.
As a party we are convinced that the pursuit of peace and justice will be the greatest gift we can ever give in honor of John Landa Nkomo.
Prof. Welshman Ncube and indeed the entire MDC joins the Nkomo family, his political party and the nation in mourning the sad loss of this gallant son, patriot and decorated servant of our motherland. We pray that the comforting spirit of the Lord be with them at this difficult time.
May his dear soul rest in peace.
