To: The Family of Vice President J L Nkomo and the Government of Zimbabwe
RE: Death of Vice President J L Nkomo
The Zimbabwe Unemployed People's Association (ZUPA) which represents the interests of millions of unemployed and economically disadvantaged Zimbabweans is sad to learn of the passing on of Republic of Zimbabwe Vice President Hon. John Landa Nkomo following illness.
On behalf of our membership, we now pass our condolences to the Government of Zimbabwe, his family and friends.
VP J L Nkomo started political activity in the 1950s, and used his membership of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) to fight for the liberation of Zimbabwe from colonial bondage leading to his incarceration at Gonakudzingwa. He maintained his position as a unifier by being the only Zimbabwean from a non majority party to be a member of all post independence unity governments.
His role in Government, his impartiality, his unifying and diplomatic approach when reaching across political divides in the programme for national healing have been articulated in the condolence messages from those that have worked closely with him from President Robert Mugabe, ZAPU leader Dr Dumiso Dabengwa, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's party, Minister of Industry and Commerce and MDC leader Prof Welshman Ncube, Diplomatic Corps including United States Embassy, political, religious and community leaders.
Sithi lala ngokuthula baba Nkomo.
