ZUNDE's 2015 Message - Zimbabwe deserves better
16 Feb 2015 at 05:40hrs | Views
Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all progressive and peace-loving Zimbabweans a different year punctuated with the fearless and selfless spirit of self-determination. In 2015, ZUNDE joins those with Zimbabwe at heart in ramping up the resolve for freedom, dignity, humanity and prosperity.
Team ZUNDE started the New Year on a very high note. In mid-January, our global leadership team held a very robust but successful Strategic Meeting where several resolutions were made. Chief among them was that ZUNDE was a team of genuine democrats that would never give up on the good fight for democracy, peace and prosperity.
This year, we shall work harder in order to overcome main challenges and obstacles that have been slowing down the rate of progress in the past. Soon, our message shall reach every corner of Zimbabwe. Together, we shall achieve our common objective; to free ourselves and transform ours into a prosperous nation. We strongly believe that it is now time for a different and new generation to take our potentially great nation forward. We can't continue to dwell in the past. Doing the same thing expecting different results is bizarre.
While we will continue to explore and navigate ways of working with other like-minded pro-democracy advocates across the political divide, one thing we will not do is to rush blindly into coalitions of convenience. We shall take our time to assess and ascertain the motive behind these calls for unity. At the same time, we will continue to develop our own agenda, the people's agenda.
ZUNDE strongly believes that now is the time for a new brand of politics; the politics of values, sacrifice and service as opposed to that of self-aggrandizement, personalities, slogans or grandstanding. We are unwavering in our condemnation of corruption, misgovernance, lawlessness, looting of national resources and elevation of mortal beings to immortal chefs. We stand ready to extricate our beloved country from the precipice through our recently- adopted socio-economic agenda – RISE (Revive our economy, Inspire our people, Sustain our democracy and Enrich our nation). This is an agenda that will be underpinned by our values of Fairness, Accountability, Inclusiveness and Respect (FAIR) as opposed to ZimASSET that has already suffered stillbirth.
With concern, we note that the "traditional" political leadership has gone on sabbatical, albeit unceremoniously. Sadly, this is a terminal cancer that affects both sides of politics. With the curious absence of "Queen Jezebel" in the last couple of weeks, the media, in particular State media, has been quiet, very quiet. The only news was that of the disputed presidential fall. This can only confirm our suspicion that national leadership has been outsourced to a private citizen with no known constitutional role or mandate, to paraphrase George Charamba.
The nation is in auto-pilot mode, so to speak. We are certainly not going anywhere with the old and tired pilot fast asleep in the cockpit. Despite the increasing hardships, Vice President Mphoko even has the audacity to say that only the disabled must be selling tomatoes on the streets. He conveniently and foolishly forgets that ZANU PF has literally disabled the entire nation. His mumbo jumbo and claptrap about Gukurahundi is not worth discussing. The man is simply a disgrace. Such is the quality of leadership ZANU PF would rather have!
While service delivery crumples, local government bosses continue to pay themselves filthy salaries. Instead of repairing roads, they would rather use public resources to acquire rough terrain vehicles. Instead of making clean water available, they are using our resources to sink boreholes in their private homes. Instead of generating electricity for the nation, they are stealing from us to buy expensive generators for themselves. And yet they think all this is normal. It is not!
They have run down our health delivery system and are now flying overseas for very minor procedures including checking blood pressure. They can't imagine sending their kids to local schools and colleges that they mismanaged so they are flying them to better institutions around the world.
At ZUNDE, we believe that the status quo is totally untenable. Zimbabwe is overdue for change, for a new direction. In 2015, let us all do some serious introspection and answer just a few questions "How can we collectively end this misery and madness? For how long can this go on? Must we continue to entrust our future and that of posterity in a leadership that has clearly lost direction and conscience?"
Zimbabwe is not anybody's private business. It is a public enterprise where each one of us must have an equal stake. When is the right time to demand what is rightfully ours? For 35 years, we haven't received any meaningful dividends from the ZANU PF executive. When shall enough be enough? If ZANU PF under Robert Mugabe's leadership has dismally failed to deliver, what would one directed by Grace Marufu and Oppah Muchinguri achieve? We are patient but certainly not stupid. Now is the time to regroup and reclaim our freedom, dignity and humanity. Zimbabwe deserves better, much better.
