Press release statement
ZAPU, the founder and authentic liberation movement and defender of human rights in Zimbabwe, is relieved that the principals of the political violence perpetrators, President Robert Mugabe of Zanu-PF and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of the MDC-T have finally admitted that their parties are violent and have taken steps to end the culture, if we are to believe them.
Zapu is anxious if the two parties will fulfill their pledge to stop their violent gangs. Zapu knows Zanu-PF's violent track better than anyone else, having been murdered and brutalized en masse by Gukurahundi between 1982 and 1987. Mass graves, broken limbs, scars and emotional trauma are there for anyone to see for themselves how evil a human being can be. Zapu notes with concern that the MDC-T, most of whose leadership, led by Tsvangirai himself, are graduates of the Zanu-PF school of politics, has played into the hands of their mentor, Zanu-PF by dealing with violence through violence.
Zapu calls on Mugabe and Tsvangirai to keep their promise and control violent gangs they have set loose in Harare and most rural areas. We warn them that violence, like fire, consumes even the person who started it. Violence has no winner.
Meanwhile, Zapu sympathizes with the peaceful Welshman Ncube-led MDC who find themselves trapped between two violent coalition partners.
We call on the Commissioner General of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Augustine Chihuri and his commanders to ensure that Zimbabwe is free from political violence. Zapu is aware that the ZRP has the capacity to deal with political violence. We wonder why they have failed to do so. Chihuri has two options: to perform or quit. His excuses and cover-ups will not be tolerated anymore. Zapu believes the blood that was shed during the struggle was enough, and the blood that was shed during Gukurahundi, Murambatsvina and during the infamous 2008 presidential run-off was uncalled for. No more blood should be shed in the name of a politician or a party. Mugabe, Tsvangirai, Ncube, Dumiso Dabengwa, and indeed any political leader, are not worth killing or dying for.
