THE 'hit man' who was reportedly hired by a city woman to kill her lover's wife yesterday told the court that he turned down the offer saying he was not a killer.

Clover Musariri said that he told Judith Makwara that killing a person was not as easy as catching a grasshopper and that he does not deal with criminals.

He also told magistrate Temba Kuwanda that he turned down the US$1 000 cash offer that Judith had tabled for killing Charity Muzorewa after she had failed to raise the US$2 000 that she had initially bade.

Judith Makwara is being charged with conspiracy to commit murder. "The accused said I want you to beat Tinashe, who is the complainant's driver. She also said that the one who was to be seriously beaten and be killed is Charity.

She said Charity was supposed to be heavily assaulted to death. She was offering US$2 000 and said she wanted to call Lovejoy who was in UK. "Lovejoy said that he was having difficulties raising the money. I overhead the conversation since we were seated next to each other in the car we were having the meeting.

"At the police, I mentioned US$1 000 because it was the amount she claimed to have after failing to raise the US$2 000.

"All along I was listening as she narrated how l was supposed to execute my job.

"After she had finished, I disembarked from the car were seated and told her that killing a person was not as easy as catching a grasshopper.

"We did not agree on anything that is why I decided to call Charity the following day," he said. Musariri, who claimed to have started training karate at the age of nine, also told the court that he is guided by the code of conduct of his profession as a karate instructor. He said he as a karate instructor he only deals with people with professional backgrounds to avoid training criminals in karate.

The Kambuzuma-bred karateka also told the court that he was not known to Judith before she approached her on April 13 this year. "I was not known to her (Judith) until April 13 this year when I received a phone call from Wellington Vhera who said that there was someone who was looking for security personnel. "I was at Mai Musodzi Hall in Mbare," he said. Makwara, who is being represented by lawyer Rungano Mahuni, denied hiring Clover to kill Charity Muzorewa as alleged.

'The accused will deny that she conspired to murder Charity Rufaro Muzorewa as alleged or at all. "The accused will tell the court that she did not hire, contract or make any agreement with the said Clover Musariri as alleged or in any way whatsoever and will put that State to strict proof thereof. 'The accused perceives that the complainant and the alleged 'hit' man Clover Musariri were working in cahoots in order to fix the accused whom complainant suspect was having an affair with her husband," she said in her defence.
