Mthwakazi Republic Party has said it has come to its attention that the government through the veterinary department has killed over hundred dogs, more are still dying through wrong vaccination, in Tohwe ward 15 Matobo North constituency.
This was confirmed by Clifford Sibanda MRP's council candidate for the affected Ward.
"The villagers were asked by the department to pay $1.00 per dog for the vaccination to which they complied unknown to them was that they were paying to get their dogs killed. The Veterinary department in the area had announced that dogs should be vaccinated for a common disease known as rabies," he said.
"The villagers who didn't have the money are the only ones who still have their dogs. Those dogs who were vaccinated they got sick and started acting strange making strange noise at night, refusing to eat, being weak and eventually dying, yet the dogs which were not vaccinated are healthy."
He said the villagers reported this to their Vet but they have not done anything to correct the situation, and the problem is yet to be investigated.
"The vet department promised to come see the dogs and possible do a post Morten on them but nothing has happened so far. Team MRP visited the area yesterday and witnessed the ugly situation prevailing there. The villagers are traumatised by this evil act of the veterinary department considering the fear that this could be transmitted to them if it continues unchecked. Matobo is a known mountainous area and villagers farm produce is under constant attack from monkeys and baboons hence the importance of their dogs. The dogs are used to easily chase these animals. Now who is going to chase those monkeys and baboons?" he said.
"The government must fully fund its parastatals, particularly the veterinary department so that they do a proper job not to put people and animals lives at risky because of its recklessness and lack of resources. Our people lost their hard earned cash and dogs. Mthwakazi Republic Party demands justice for the people of Matobo North, particularly at Tohwe ward 15."
