Defacing of campaign posters rampant in Gwanda

Political tension has begun in some parts of Gwanda District as political parties have allegedly started destroying campaign posters belonging to political opponents.

Habakkuk Trust election monitoring team came across defaced, torn and destroyed campaign posters in some parts of Gwanda District.

According to Section 36 (6.d) of Electoral Amendment Act; No political party or any of its members or supporters, and no candidate or any of his or her supporters, may damage or deface property, including the election posters, placards, banners and other election material of another party or candidate, and any posters or other voter education materials disseminated by the Electoral Commission;

Elections in Zimbabwe have a history marred with political violence, hate speech and destruction of campaign materials. With numerous calls for peace and tolerance made by the President of Zimbabwe, the Election Management Body and organisations such as Habakkuk Trust; political misfits have resorted to covert tactics of intimidation as witnessed in the defacing of rural campaign posters.
