A Bulawayo woman, 36, allegedly stole an assortment of clothes from a shop, stashed them between her thighs and pretended to be crippled as she walked out of the shop, a Bulawayo magistrate heard.
Miss Marilyn Mutshina heard this when Barbra Mponda whose address was not given, appeared before her yesterday facing charges of shoplifting. Mponda is believed to have been in the company of other suspects commonly referred to as omarobane who remained outside shop Number 6 Garden Court along Robert Mugabe Way.
She allegedly entered the shop and stole four skirts, three blouses, three jackets and a dress, which she stashed between her legs.
She then allegedly left the shop walking as if she was physically handicapped in a bid to deceive staff.
The court heard that the way she was walking drew the attention of other shoppers and passersby.
She was spotted by the owner of the shop, Ms Elizabeth Vavashe who noticed some clothes protruding out of her skirts.
Mponda initially pleaded guilty to shoplifting but her plea was later altered to that of not guilty after she changed statements, saying she did not steal the clothes.
The magistrate then remanded her to Monday for trial on $100 bail.
Mr Mazwi Goto for the State told the court that on Wednesday at about 12pm, Mponda went to the shop where she allegedly stole the clothes.
After noticing that she had been spotted, Mponda allegedly fled into a getaway car, a Mazda Premacy, which at that time was allegedly reversing from the parking bay.
The court heard that she jumped into the car, which then sped off.
The matter was reported to the police and Mponda was arrested on a later date.
The total value of stolen clothes was $590 and clothes valued at $140 were recovered.
