MATABELELAND REGION is the one that is currently having the largest population who are stateless due to Gukurahundi.
This was revealed by the human rights activists recently during a debate over the importance of identity documents and the manner in which they are accessed.
Effie Ncube said most of the stateless citizens in Zimbabwe are in Matabeleland and Midlands due to the 1980s Gukurahundi.
He was speaking during the Nkayi Community Parliament debate.
Ncube said people without IDs run into hundreds of thousands in the country with Matabeleland having the bulk of them.
Ncube said Nkayi has problems with ID, birth certificates, death certificates and passports adding that it is one of the districts that have such a problem more than others.
"All districts in the country have the problem of these documents, there is no district without this problem. But this problem is worse in Matabeleland due to Gukurahundi," he said.
Ncube said people without identity documents identifying themselves, they face a lot of problems, the first being statelessness.
He said there is no evidence that they belong to where they stay, there is no evidence that they are Zimbabweans.
"An identity document gives you a lot of rights. You cannot have a mobile phone line, you cannot have a formal job, you cannot open a bank account, you cannot have a legal marriage, you cannot have a house, and you cannot have many things that can only be accessed when you have an ID," he said.
