Broke man bashes girlfriend over money

A 46‑year‑old Plumtree man has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend for refusing to give him money.
Joel Ngwenya is accused of severely assaulting Sihawukele Dube, leaving her with a fractured rib cage.
He appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware, who remanded him in custody.
Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi told the court that on 16 December last year, Ngwenya demanded money from his girlfriend. When she told him she did not have any, he allegedly dragged her into the bedroom and assaulted her.
After the attack, Ngwenya is said to have forcibly taken her cellphone, valued at US$350, before leaving the scene.
