Man jailed 18 years for attempted rape

The Gwanda Magistrates' Court has sentenced a 29‑year‑old man from Guyu to 18 years in prison after he was convicted of attempted rape.
The court heard that on 19 February 2026, the offender, who lives with the victim - his stepmother - forced his way into her bedroom by knocking down the door. He then strangled her until she fell to the ground, dragged her behind the house and removed her underwear.
He attempted to rape her, but the woman screamed, prompting him to flee.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to his arrest.
The court condemned the attack, noting that sexual abuse is a serious crime that leaves deep emotional and psychological scars on victims. It further highlighted the disturbing nature of such offences when committed by close family members.
