A soccer coach for a Division Two Club in Hwange has landed in court for bashing his customarily married wife accusing her of being barren.
The irony of it is that the woman has two children from her former marriage while the man, Patrick Ngoma (42) has no child in his life-the court heard.
Ngoma, who coaches a Division Two Club in the mining town left the court wondering whether he is of sound conscience when the woman told the court that she is two months pregnant and he is responsible.
The wife said he knew that she was pregnant when he beat her.
"I am two months pregnant and want to withdraw charges. I was also violent towards him," said Ms Hoyani Mbedzi (34).
Ngoma pleaded guilty to physical abuse but was spared the agony of jail term when Ms Mbedzi tendered an affidavit to withdraw charges. However, Hwange provincial magistrate Mrs Rose Dube suspended passing of sentence for five years.
"Why do you beat a pregnant woman? You are a disappointment, so now who can't bear a child you or her, because she has other children?. Do you know what has saved you? It is your wife who has tendered an withdrawal affidavit.
"Passing of sentence is postponed for three years on condition that you do not commit any offence involving physical abuse. However, if you assault anyone within that period, you will first be sentenced on this case before the particular one is dealt with," said the magistrate.
Ngoma left the court in stitches when he said he loves his wife and had stopped drinking beer on the day he beat her.
"I love my wife. I have leant a lesson. I stopped drinking beer the following day. On that day it was the devil that drove me to beat her," he said sending the gallery into laughter.
The couple resides at 254 Empumalanga and Ngoma is employed by Makomo Resources.
The prosecutor Mr Tongai Gudo told the court how on 6 November at about 11pm, Ngoma arrived home drunk and started shouting at Ms Mbedzi. He told her that she was not a woman because she was not bearing children for her.
Mr Gudo said Ngoma slapped his wife on the cheek and she fell down.
He went on to grab her hands backwards and sat on her back with face down-in a movie style that could send any wrestler green with envy.
The woman was rushed to St Patrick's Hospital where she was treated and discharged.
In defence Ngoma said the matter was a minor domestic issue and he sat on her back because she was retaliating.
He begged the court's mercy saying he loved his wife and was taking care of her, her two children and his elderly mother.
