A 54-year old widow dragged her 65-year-old lover to court demanding maintenance for the upkeep of their two children aged seven and five.

Sithabile Ngope of Ngwana area in Mangwe told the court her "boyfriend" Phathisa Moyo had only provided three napkins and a towel for the upkeep of their children.

She said she regretted having snatched her neighbour's husband in 1999 as he was not supporting his children.

"Your Worship this man proposed love to me in 1999 while he was married to another woman.  He promised that he would eventually divorce his wife and marry me and that he would never neglect me and his two children that we have together," she said.

"He told me that he wanted to see his children with his first wife finish school before marrying me and do the same for our children later."
Added Ngope: "He has not kept his word as it is now time for our children to start school but he is dodging us. When I was pregnant with his first child he only bought a towel and three napkins and that was it.

"I was foolish to have trusted him in the first place when he said he would leave his wife for me.  Now, in addition to the five children that I raised alone after my husband passed on, I have to look after these two children."

Ngope said she agreed to have an affair with Moyo in a bid to get assistance in raising her children after her husband had passed on. Moyo, responding, denied having neglected his children with Ngope saying he only provided them with what he could afford.

He also denied that he promised to marry the complainant but admitted they had an affair. Plumtree magistrate Gideon Ruvetsa advised the pair to return to court on March 10 for judgment.

Ngope is demanding $250 for the upkeep of her two children from her war veteran lover.
