A 69-YEAR-OLD man beat his wife with a knobkerrie for denying him his conjugal rights, a court heard yesterday.
Elofu Ndlovu of Sinkugwe village in Gwanda District told magistrate Sheila Nazombe that he gave his wife Sibusisiwe Sithole, 52, a thorough beating as she was denying him sex.
"I love my wife very much but I was angered by the fact that she does not want to have sex with me since December last year. Surely, it is my right to have sex with her because she is my wife," Ndlovu said.
The court heard that Ndlovu beat his wife of 30 years several times all over the body and she sustained serious injuries.
"I am now sympathising with my wife because khathesi useyisilima sami. I will have to sell one of my beasts so that she gets medical attention," he said before turning to his wife to apologise.
"I will never do it again," added Ndlovu.
Nazombe sentenced Ndlovu to 15 months in prison of which six months were suspended on condition he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.
The remaining nine months were wholly suspended on condition he performs 315 hours of community service at Hillside Police Station in Bulawayo starting on Monday next week.
Prosecutor Sikholiwe Ncube narrated how Ndlovu, who works in Burnside in Bulawayo, beat his wife while they were at their homestead last month.
"On March 10 at around 11am, the accused person approached the complainant while she was preparing breakfast in the kitchen and started accusing her of falling in love with a fellow villager, Jericho Moyo.
"A misunderstanding arose leading to the accused assaulting the complainant all over her body using a knobkerrie. The complainant sustained a swollen head, a cut on her right eye, swollen hand and swollen thigh," the court heard.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Ndlovu's arrest.
