Man loses wife over unpaid lobola

IT is popular within Africans that a man does not have to pay all the bride price at once, but it all back-fired for a Hwange man when his in-laws accepted bride price from his wife's boyfriend, arguing that he had failed to pay the outstanding balance.
Ronald Chiwara reportedly got a blow when he received uninvited guests who said they had come to collect their "woman" referring to his wife Ester Mangwana.
To his surprise, Mangwana had already packed her belongings and she told her husband to get more information from her parents before leaving Chiwara.
A reliable source revealed that the shell-shocked Chiwara never wasted any minute as he asked one of his neighbours to accompany him to his in-laws to find out what was happening.
"They proceeded to Mangwana's family to enquire on why they had sent people to collect his wife.
"Mangwana's brother bluntly told Chiwara that they no longer recognised him as their son-in-law because he had failed to pay bride price despite staying with Ester for more than five years.
"He was also told that the woman had got a serious man who paid all the bride-price and therefore should forget about her and their child," said the source.
It is said that they were immediately shown the exit without being given a chance to express their feelings.
When Chiwara was contacted for comment, he confirmed the reports.
"My wife left me two weeks ago and she was misled by her greedy brothers who demanded lobola from another man.
They had charged me eight beasts for lobola and I managed to pay three. Since they have given my wife to another man, I will fight till they give me back my cattle."
Chiwara revealed that he has always had bad blood with his in-laws as they demeaned him for being poor.
On the other hand, the woman at the centre of controversy denied that he was married to Chiwara.
"He is lying, he never paid lobola for me and I moved out of his house because he abused me. He is just jealous that now I am married," said Mangwana.
