Gwanda Residents Association members Bekezela Fuzwayo has said Matabeleland's problem was that for many years people in the region have been engulfed with fear which has led them fail to confront the powers that be over lack of development.

"The problem with Matabeleland is that for years we have been engulfed in fear. Fear of an obvious history we need not go into here. This has led to a lot of our very capable leaders opting to take a back seat and that allowed for some mediocre opportunistic people to appear in our fore," he said.

"The mediocre ones have mostly come out being dragged by the powerful from outside us and imposed on us."

He said his is why they will never have the guts to talk to Matabeleland issues or stand for them as they have masters to serve.

"The biggest agenda of their masters is to make sure that as people of the region we accept second class citizenship and subjectivity and our so called leaders are very ably used as the implements of moving that agenda," Fuzwayo said.

"This is why they always clap and cheer at even very obvious lies about us or even when we are termed useless men who only know how to make babies and rush off to South Africa or even an uneducated crop that only knows crime."

He said they are the first ones to tag some of us tribalists when we speak to the issues of marginalisation of our region.

"Some of us who no masters to bootlick have taken that position to stand up and speak for our people even to death if that's what it takes. One day when we are gone someone somewhere will stand up and say those guys once spoke to this. It's a matter of time a new generation of leaders will arise from Matabeleland and one of them will lead this country," Fuzwayo said.
