A 43-YEAR-OLD Bulilima man will spend the next year in prison for beating up his 80-year-old mother and 76-year-old uncle who were trying to restrain him from destroying his parent's household property.
Friday Moyo from Ntambana area arrived home at night drunk and started insulting his mother, Ellina Moyo.
The old woman tried to restrain him but he struck her with a spade. Friday also attacked his uncle, Max Moyo.
He was convicted on his own plea of guilty to two counts of physical abuse by Plumtree magistrate, Livard Philemon and was jailed for a year. "It's unheard of for a person to assault his parents worse those who are of advanced age as yours. It shows that you're not morally upright and maybe spending some time in prison will help change the perspective that you have that elders can be assaulted," said Philemon.
Prosecuting, Rose Sibanda said Friday assaulted his elders on February 7. "Friday arrived home drunk around 10PM armed with a spade and started shouting and threatening to destroy his mother's property. His mother tried to stop him but Friday hit her with the spade on the left shoulder and on her back and he fled from the homestead," said Sibanda.
She said Friday then went to his uncle's homestead still armed with the spade.
Sibanda said the man locked his uncle's door from outside while the old man was inside and fled from the homestead.
"Max called out for his domestic worker who unfastened the door for him. He then pursued his nephew together with other villagers. Friday, upon seeing the old man struck him with the spade all over the body."
