'Zanu-PF, Zimbabwe's leading human rights violator'

Zimbabwe's governing party Zanu-PF, which claims to have fought for freedom and democracy within the broad liberation movement, remains the country's leading human rights violator – a role it has maintained since Independence in 1980, a new report by the Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) says.

In its monthly reported for August titled Politics Leading the Law in Zimbabwe, ZPP says 51% of recorded human rights violations in August were perpetrated by Zanu-PF and its activists followed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police at 28% against general citizens, and opposition CCC.

"In August, ZPP monitored and documented 257 human rights violations, with 3,321 victims identified (2 334 males and 987 females, including 31 (14 male and 17 female) Persons with Disabilities," reads the report in part.

"The majority of human rights cases were perpetrated by the Zanu-PF party, responsible for 51% of the violations, followed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at 28%."
