Another sham election

23 Aug 2023 at 16:23hrs | Views
As we go the wire and reach the high political pitch, it is now crystal clear that the main political menu is between Emmerson Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa and not even political savvy voter will mosa the two in the ballot box.

The Zimbabwe electorate is a two tier system where there are people supporting the revolutionary party whilst others support the opposition.

During the campaigning period, we have noticed that there were only two political parties who have been hitting the ground mobilising and galvanising for support over the past two months.

There are still uncertainties on how the other presidential aspirants managed to raise $US20 000 but all combined failed to conduct rallies across the country even to hire a small stadium like No. 7 Ground in Mbare Harare.

In the near future they must simply donate the money to charity organisations and not to waste people's time and resources.

Nelson Chamisa has so far presented himself as a man of the people and he has appealed so much to the young generation.

It is possible that Citizens Coalition for Change led by Nelson Chamisa will wrestle power from Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa's led Zanu PF which has been at the helm of power for more than four decades of which half of them were marred with economic challenges and coupled with corruption.

After successful campaigns from both the ruling party and the opposition the main impediment in this whole election is centred on the electoral body whether it is going to deliver a free, fair and credible election.

A lot of discrepancies have so far been noticed during the voting day, a ploy to frustrate the urban areas like Harare and Bulawayo by delaying the voting due to the unavailability of some ballot papers whilst in rural areas where Zanu PF is a stronghold voting started exactly 0700hrs and was going on smoothly.

On another note Zanu PF members set up tables near the polling stations recording people's identity cards which is breaking the electoral laws. The law forbids anyone from setting up tables 300 meters from the polling station but the law enforcement agencies  saw this and did not take any action.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has proved that it is incapacitated and cannot supervise a national election but fit for supervising a by election. It has also shown its incompetence and unprofessional conduct by telling the electorate that the delays to open polling stations were caused by late printing of ballot papers because of court cases raised during the nomination court.

If the electoral body fails to conduct a free, fair and credible election Zimbabwe will be another hot spot for political instability which will affect the whole of Sadc region.

Zimbabweans living outside the country have become a burden on other countries' fiscal budget and a lot of people will start running away from the country because of its poor economic performances.
