Zimbabwe on a knife edge

12 Sep 2023 at 14:08hrs | Views
Zimbabwe is now treading on a slippery political crisis. It was never in doubt that a coup government no matter how many goals it concedes, it will never under what circumstances surrender power to the mass.

It is a fact that all the political dynamics in Zimbabwe are controlled by the military. It needs more than a vote to remove a sitting coup government.

We are going to experience a political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe as we dive into the last five year term under Emmerson Mnangagwa.

One does not need a rocket scientist to see how Mnangagwa is busy trying to seek validation for his re-election and ascendancy to power after an August sham and shambolic election.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa's propaganda machines have been well oiled and working throughout the clock propagating the narrative that the election was free, fair and credible.

We saw the likes of the motor mouth African National Congress Secretary General Mr Fikile Mbalula posting on his X feed that the election went well and that it was a true reflection of the people's will. Mbalula of late has started behaving and sounding like a Zanu PF political commissar deliberately ignoring the irregularities noted by SEOM's report.

However the Sadc Election Observer Mission (SEOM) did a big blow to Emmerson Mnangagwa's legitimacy. His re-engagement efforts and his mantra the country is open for business policy has been torched in a big flame of fire. The report left President Emmerson Mnangagwa exposed and clutching thin air.

Moreover the refusal of most SADC heads of state to give a green light to Mnangagwa's inauguration and the absence of all three presidents in the SADC Troika added salt to the injury.

The bloc used to rubber stamp every election in Zimbabwe and giving it a thump up without any scrutiny.

Legitimacy is an issue of concern which will haunt Mnangagwa in the next five years. This blatant electoral malpractices and manipulation of the whole electoral process will remain the country's worst election ever to be experienced in the history of Zimbabwe since independence.

Attacking the Sadc election report will not solve anything, rather the Zanu PF government must swallow its pride and accept that they have erred and have produced a half baked election not fit for consumption. It must however seek ways to rectify the problem and move on. There was actually no election to talk about. Surely there is no reason of having elections and pretend as if there is democracy when in actual fact there is a one party state government hiding under democracy.

Of all the political parties around the globe it's only ZANU PF which comes out guns blazing when they are called to order. They always come up with damning accusations of calling whoever calls them to order a Western puppet or alternatively a regime change agent.

The brazenly electoral fraud done by the regime will have long term dire consequences both regionally and internationally.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa must not develop a thick skin as he risks being isolated by many and will go down into the books of history for being the worst President ever. He must prove a point that he can change the current political, social and economic status of the country during his last term.
