Progress in Tokwe-Mukosi construction a welcome move

06 Oct 2011 at 13:50hrs | Views

#000000"> It is interesting and fascinating to hear that work at  Tokwe-Mukosi Dam in Masvingo South  is in progress and that the construction at that biggest dam inland in Zimbabwe is nearing completion.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">Good news indeed as the completion of the dam would rejuvenate and give lifeline to thousands of people who are residing in the  drought-prone regions of Masvingo province as the dam will create a green belt that would cover the large if not  the whole of the southern part of the country.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">With  climatic conditions  changing every year, and in some instances betraying  farmers` plans who are always prepared to reap what they would have sown, Tokwe-Mukosi Dam will give life and bring happiness to the farmers.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000">Zimbabwe is full of hard working people who are good in exhibiting their prowess in their fields of success but unfortunately they are sometimes betrayed by lack of resources to buttress their skills.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">As such farmers in the low veld are always in the receiving end as successive rain seasons do not supply them with the required normal rainfall that could make them  masters of the soil. Every year farmers in the Southern part of the country find themselves rushing to the government and donors seeking assistance for food handouts so that their families get something to fill their stomachs.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">So the completion of the Tokwe-Mukosi Dam will usher in a new lease of life to the people in Masvingo South and surrounding arid parts of Chivi and Chiredzi as they will benefit from water drawn there.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">The dam will create more irrigation projects in Masvingo South that would make it possible for the people there to stop relying more on food handouts as some of the food handouts from international donors come with unbearable prescriptions that may lead hungry people to politically betray patriotism in them. As they say a hungry man is an angry man, so such prescriptions can  be  dangerous if prescribed to a hungry man and that can turn out to be disastrous to the stability of the country.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">As such,  all the people in Masvingo South and Chiredzi as well as Chivi districts are patiently waiting  for the completion of the dam as they had been eagerly waiting for it for the past ten years to harvest water from Tokwe-Mukosi Dam.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">This dam would be a benefit to the country as irrigation projects would also produce crops that would supply the southern part of the country and helping to ease pressure from the government in giving food aid to people in the region.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">As I write this article hunger is rearing its ugly head in Masvingo South as farmers had failed to harvest enough to feed their families. The past rain season started well but as time went on the rain disappeared on the crucial time when farmers were expecting bumper harvest and as such crops succumbed to scotching heat from the sun sending hunger signals which are now the order of the day there.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000"> So talk of Tokwe-Mukosi Dam nearing completion come as great news to the people there as they prepare themselves to benefit in a big way from dam proceeds.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">Boat cruising and fishing would also bring in the much-needed American dollars in the country as those who will be involved in such activities would be required to pay something for them to be allowed to exercise such activities in the dam.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">Winter ploughing which had not been taking place in Masvingo South due to unavailability of adequate water in the southern part of the country would be introduced as water from Tokwe-Mukosi is going to supplement the current stretch of water from Lake Mutirikwe which had hitherto been found to be not adequate to supply that region to the levels expected.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">Water from Mutirikwe Dam had been overwhelmed by sugar plantations in Chiredzi, Mukwasine and Triangle making it impossible for new farmers to get access to irrigation projects in the region and the Tokwe-Mukosi project is a welcome move to the people who are serious in farming business there.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">Completion of Tokwe-Mukosi Dam will be a great achievement by government indeed. Various projects that will ensue as a result of  water from that dam would probably burst up the illegal sanctions imposed on the country by United States America(USA), Britain and her European allies. It will be a great challenge indeed to those western countries as people would be able to do irrigation projects to sustain their livelihood.

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">The long and tiring wait would  be soon over as 2013 clocks so fast for the people in Masvingo South and government to benefit from such a big initiative in the country. So patience must stay with us as we wait to witness the completion of the biggest lake in the country.
