Pumula High beat Magwegwe in final
05 Jun 2012 at 01:14hrs | Views
TWO goals in either half by Admire Yakobe and Thabo Sibanda were enough to send Pumula High School to the inter-zonal M & H games' finals at the expense of Magwegwe High School in an Under-17 boys soccer match that was played at St Bernard's High School on Friday.
The inter-zonal schools' finals will be at Gifford High School on 15 June.
"We have been the past Zone A representatives in the inter-zonal matches in the past few years and this year it is no different. Our goal, however, is to go all the way to the national finals this time around and I have faith in my team since I started with them last year as Under-16s and they are a compact unit," Pumula High School sports director Claytus Maphosa said after the match.
Magwegwe High School sports director Lungile Ndlovu blamed his team's loss to fatigue.
"My boys are still Under-16 years and they played against older opponents. Another thing is that there were so many teams in the group stages and fatigue got the better of my young team," Ndlovu said.
The Copa Coca-Cola Zone A inter-schools matches will be played on 15 June at the same venue.
In an Under-14 girls' basketball tournament played on Saturday at Montrose High School, Nkulumane High School beat Ihlathi High School 25-12 and they will represent Bulawayo in the national finals at Jameson High School in Kadoma on 22 June.
The champions beat Founders High School 21-8 in the semi-finals while the runners-up edged Eveline High School 12-6 to reach the final.
Ihlathi High School's Harriet Chabikwa was named the tournament's most valuable player while Nicole Nyoni of Nkulumane High School was the tournament's top scorer with 36 points.
Meanwhile, Manunure High School of Kwekwe will on Friday play host to the secondary schools' Copa Coca-Cola launch.
Official launches are always held at the defending champions' home ground and thereafter the inter-schools games will begin with the ultimate goal being Mosi-oa-Tunya in Victoria Falls for this year's national finals.
The Copa Coca-Cola tournament is for Under-16 boys and Under-17 girls.
