PSL clubs meet on sponsorship

THIRTEEN clubs, with notable absentees being Dynamos, Shabanie Mine and Harare City, met in Harare on Saturday where they deliberated on the contentious issue of sponsorship agreements and television rights.
The meeting came after an incident in which NetOne and BancABC haggled over branding rights on the Dynamos kit for the Charity Shield which was sponsored by the former in a season's curtain raising appetiser in which DeMbare later beat Motor Action.
In the dispute, Dynamos rejected the idea by Charity Shield sponsors NetOne to dump their kit which bore their official funders BancABC's logo, something that riled the mobile network company who had another kit prepared for the Harare giants, specifically for that match.
NetOne's argument was that they wanted to get maximum mileage from the match while BancAbc said they had an agreement with Dynamos which stipulated that the Harare giants will always don kits emblazoned with BancABC's logo at all times.
The idea behind yesterday's meeting was to come up with harmonised way of advertising and rights, and the clubs duly resolved to revist a 2009 resolution passed by the clubs that the league sponsors take precedent over club sponsors. The event sponsor should take space of 200 to 250 square centimetres in front of the jerseys, with the other sponsors taking space not exceeding 20 square centimetres above. There would be no knockout competition without an event sponsor who would also be required to provide short-term competition.
Confirming the resolutions PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele said: "The event sponsor should provide the uniform, transport, accommodation and cater for appearance fees for the players. A marketing committee will be tasked to look at the rules and regulations governing the issue of sponsorship."
Ndebele also said the clubs resolved that 10 percent from proceeds of touchline advertising would go to the PSL with the balance shared equally among the clubs.
Meanwhile the second transfer window will open on 1 July during which clubs will be allowed to deregister five players.
