Chapungu beats Tongogara to gain PSL promotion

Chapungu beat Tongogara 4-2 to clinch the Central Soccer League PSL ticket ending their five year absence and restoring elite soccer to Gweru after a year's.

Chapungu were relegated in 2008 while Hardbody were the last Gweru side to feature in the PSL last year

Just like the proverbial phoenix, airforce outfit Chapungu United, have just risen from the ashes of extinction with aplomb and distinction.

The return of Chapungu United might bring the number of servicemen to four next season should three of them manage to escape relegation.

The trio are Black Mambas, Black Rhinos and Buffaloes.

The return of the airmen will bring back sweet memories of their glory days. Then the team that is now thin on talent, had such an array of stars like Kennedy Chihuri, Wellington 'Money Maker' Shangiwa, the late Nkulumo 'Daidzai Vamwe' Donga, Nonhlanhla 'Boxer' Moyo, the Muteji twins Cain and Abel, Maxwell 'MaRhino' Dube, Innocent Chogugudza, Phillip Marufu, Dumisani Mufudze Edmore 'Zikeeper' Sibanda to mention only a handful.

Then Chapungu was a team to beat.

I still have sad memories of how Chapungu mercilessly contributed to the relegation of Watungwa Watungwa in 2001 at Ascot. Then Chapungu ran riot sending their fellow servicemen Buffaloes to the cleaners with a 6-0 massacre score-line.

The Chapungu strikers who rang rings around the then Shadreck Mugurasawe marshalled porous rearguard, notched in three goals inside fiftenn minutes. That was how lethal Mufudze and Marufu were.

When the airmen were de-winged into the unfashionable Division One world they lost Marufu to Dynamos. Marufu was part of the Dembare cast that sailed into the 2008 African safari semi-final under the tutelage of the soft spoken David 'Yogi' Mandigora. Marufu shone like a beacon in a team that was dripping with talent in Edward Sadomba, Willard Manyatera, Brighton Tuwaya, Thomas Svesve, Benjamin Marere, Wonder Sithole, Murape Murape Mtshumaeli Moyo, Carrington Gomba to mention but a few.

Marufu went on to surpass what former soccer star of the year Dube had achieved at the Glamour Boys. Marufu's exploits in the champions league attracted the interests of crack Congolese side which signed him alongside Moyo, Gomba and Ephraim Mazarura.

Unfortunately the quartet failed to re-produce the form that had made them household names at Dembare. Ironically Chapungu United had to re-call Marufu to the fold this year as they launched an onslaught on the Central region Division One whose ticket they landed after bombing their infantry brothers Tongogara who have been in the wilderness for decades now.

Tongogara who were home to the age-less Britto Gwere, Jairos Tapera and Jack Mutandagai have been forced to make a dash for the drawing board.

Welcome back Chapungu. Let the good times roll.
