Standard Bank workers go on strike

Standard Bank (Stanbic) workers will today stage an industrial action at the financial institution's headquarters in Harare to press for 10% increase in salary and allowances, the Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (Zibawu) said.
Zibawu said Stanbic Bank non-managerial workers in Harare, Mutare and Bulawayo will undertake a collective job action against what they have classified as the oppressive and carefree Stanbic Bank.
The bank has reportedly failed to effect a 10% salary increment for workers in the past months and is under pressure to comply.
Other demands being made include school fees allowances of at least $200 per term for
each child and 100% medical aid cover.
Currently the lowest paid worker at the financial institution is said to be taking home $626 per month, while the union is advocating for at least $700 in salaries for each of the workers per month, with allowances.
"All is set despite the unlawful shenanigans by one Ministry of Labour official (name supplied) who attempted to scuttle the secret ballot by refusing to release labour officers.
"It is now time for action and we call on all those who despise oppression of workers . . . to stand up for Stanbic workers interests and rights," Zibawu said.
The strike will be presided over by the Zibawu president Farai Katsande who will officially launch the boycott against the Stanbic brand.
