IN a distressing incident, a woman from Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo, lost her money and valuables to a self-proclaimed sangoma and his wife during a cleansing ceremony.
Lubelihle Makwati met the self-proclaimed sangoma, only identified as General Mashengo and his wife Octavia Mashengo while they were on their way to Zimbabwe after being deported from South Africa.
They claimed to possess supernatural powers and offered to assist her with a ritual cleansing to solve her problems to which Makwati agreed.
Believing their promises, Lubelihle agreed to their help.
The sangoma went on to tell Makwati that she needed cleansing as early as possible.
In an interview with B-Metro, Makwati said General Mashengo told her that she needed urgent cleansing and suggested they do it at Beitbridge Border Post.
When they got to the cleansing site, they ordered Makwati to change her clothes since they were going to perform a ritual which would possibly wet and mess her clothes.
"We made our stop at the Beitbridge Border Post to conduct the ritual cleansing.
"It was during that supposed ritual that I figured something must be wrong because of the way the sangoma and his wife seemed to be communicating.
"Although they were not saying anything out loud, the two seemed to be communicating something to each other.
"I was distracted while changing my clothes and the couple swiftly made off with my phone, a substantial amount of money, and a large suitcase with my clothes," said Makwati.
She also suspected another woman Nozithelo Matsika, who claims to be from Kwekwe but residing in Bulawayo to be part of the syndicate.
"I am suspecting that another woman who identified herself as Nozithelo Matsika is involved in this because when I went back to the car that we were travelling in she was also not there," said Makwati.
Makwati reported the matter to the police who are reportedly investigating it.
