A 20-YEAR-OLD former Gokomere Mission pupil in Masvingo allegedly conspired with his young brother and sat for Ordinary Level examinations on his behalf at St Stanislaus Secondary School.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the incident, which happened last week.
He said the suspect, Albert Chivafa of Rungwe Village, in Gokomere area under Chief Zimuto was arrested and would appear in court soon.
He wrote the examination on behalf of Liberty Mangeche (18).
"I can confirm receiving the report to that effect. The man was arrested and he is expected to appear in court soon," he said.
The headmaster at the school, Mr Artwell Maphosa, said the incident happened on 14 November at about 9 am.
He said the matter has since been reported to the Zimbabwe Examination Council (Zimsec).
Mr Maphosa said on the fateful day, Chivafa was caught writing a Geography Paper One examination for his younger brother.
"On the day in question Chivafa who completed his Ordinary Level in 2012 at Gokomere, was caught writing an Ordinary Level Geography Paper Two examination for his brother, Liberty Mangeche, who was an external candidate. The man was summoned to the examination committee and he was asked to write an admission of guilt report before they handed him to the police," he said.
When Chivafa was caught, it was realised that he had already written other papers on his Mangeche's behalf.
"Chivafa was caught writing a Geography Paper Two at 9am by the invigilator Ms Rumbidzai Rukasa and could not proceed. It was also discovered that he had already written Shona Paper One and Two, English Paper One and Two, Geography Paper One.
"At first he denied that he was writing for someone before we discovered that the particulars, he was using were not his. The problem is that he has similar features with those of Liberty such that the invigilator easily believed that he was the actual candidate. The two brothers share the same mother but different fathers," he said.
Mr Maphosa said all the papers written were nullified.
Efforts to contact Zimsec regional manager Mr Silvanos Dandira were fruitless as he was said to be out of town.
Contacted for comment, acting Provincial Education Director Mrs Fadzai Jirivengwa could neither confirm nor deny the matter but promised to make some investigations.
