A delegation of 10 Chinese medical specialists arrived in Harare yesterday to offer medical support in the public health sector under a bilateral arrangement with the Government.
The group, which is the fifth team to be seconded to the country under the same arrangement, comprises different specialties, including orthopaedics, radiologists, anaesthetist, paediatricians, gynaecologists, obstetricians and physicians.
In an interview with The Herald at Robert Mugabe International Airport yesterday, team leader Dr Shu Chuqiang said they were looking forward to impart knowledge to Zimbabwean doctors for the next one year.
"We will be staying in Zimbabwe for about one year," said Dr Shu.
"As the Chinese medical team, we are looking forward to devote our medical skills and experience to assisting patients here in Zimbabwe, as well as learning from each other with the Zimbabwean doctors."
The Chinese doctors will be seconded to central hospitals and they are also bringing medicines and sundries.
"We have some machines and medicines which we will be bringing in to improve and advance the health services to patients we would be attending," said Dr Shu.
The country has a shortage of doctors and the coming in of the Chinese will improve service delivery in public hospitals. Zimbabwe and China enjoy good relations dating back to the days of the liberation struggle when the Asian giant supported the fight for independence.
