Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandolwenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident which occurred in Makorokoro area on August 27 at around 11PM.
He said Godknows Ncube (26) struck Martin Nyathi (28) with a stone on the head while they were on their way from a drinking spree.
"The accused and the now deceased who were friends were drinking beer together at Makorokoro Business Centre, Mayobodo. At 11PM they both left the business centre for their homesteads. Along the way a misunderstanding arose between the two after the deceased attempted to take the suspect's cell phone by force," said Assistant Inspector Moyo.
He added: "The deceased slapped the suspect with open hands and in retaliation. The suspect picked stone and hit the deceased once on the head who fell down and became unconscious. Suspect left the scene for his homestead leaving the now deceased lying on the ground. On the following day at around 8AM an informant found the body of the deceased at the scene and made a report at ZRP Mayobodo."
Assistant Inspector Moyo said Ncube was arrested and is assisting police with investigations. He urged members of the public not to resort to violence as a way of resolving disputes.
Assistant Inspector Moyo said when faced with disputes people must engage third parties. He said unnecessary loss of life over petty issues was disturbing.
