Crackdown on open air churches condemned
17 Jun 2024 at 04:04hrs | Views
Rocky Moyo, leader of the Council of Churches in Africa, criticized the Bulawayo City Council for not taking action during raids on open-air worshippers by the Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP). He emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the issue and called for inclusive consultations before allowing individuals to take the law into their own hands.
Moyo expressed concern over political parties interfering with religious practices, highlighting the Council's push for regulations on apostolic churches regarding the use of flags, tents, and artefacts, which are seen as conflicting with local culture. He acknowledged the issues that open-air churches must address but stressed that confrontation was not the solution.
MRP, a secessionist party, has conducted raids on churches, accusing them of environmental pollution. Moyo urged for community involvement in finding solutions to these challenges.
