Bulawayo dumps colonial mayor's robes

Bulawayo councillors have resolved to retire the colonial-era mayoral gown in favor of a design that reflects the city's rich cultural heritage. The new regalia will be crafted by internationally acclaimed fashion designer and founder of Ganu Designs, who has been tasked with spearheading the project.

The outgoing mayoral gown, a red robe with black velvet trim, mock sable fur, lace frills, a ceremonial hat, and gold chains, has been a symbol of civic authority since its introduction in the 14th century. The design is rooted in English traditions dating back to the reign of Edward III, when municipal corporations adopted ceremonial attire reflecting their wealth and administrative authority.

The current robes, purchased from England in 1960 for £240.19 (approximately $482), were intended to last 50 years. Despite Zimbabwe's independence in 1980 and the appointment of the city's first black mayor, Naison Ndlovu, the gown has remained unchanged, drawing criticism as a vestige of colonial history.

At a recent council meeting, Town Clerk Christopher Dube revealed that the City of Bulawayo had received repeated calls from residents to replace the gown with one that resonates with local culture.

"It was noted that in order to do so, there would be a need to engage designers who could work with the municipality to design the new mayoral gown," said Mr. Dube.

The council also discussed the practical drawbacks of the current gown, which is made of heavy material and unsuitable for Bulawayo's hot summers. The proposed redesign will include both summer and winter versions to ensure comfort during civic functions held in different seasons.

The move is part of a broader effort by the city to embrace its identity and move away from colonial influences. Councillors believe that the new gown will symbolize Bulawayo's pride in its heritage while reflecting the cultural diversity and creativity of its people.

The project is expected to be completed soon, with the unveiling of the new design anticipated to be a highlight of the city's efforts to modernize its civic traditions.
